Hayden Relf is a Sydney-based multi-disciplined artist and designer. His artistic practice extends into mixed media, time-based, and performance art. Since 2016, he has primarily worked in art direction for live events, theatre, and music festivals. He has transitioned into working in film and is currently employed as a buyer/dresser for film and TV and is an active member of the Australian Production Design Guild and the MEAA. In June 2022, Hayden graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Design for Performance) from NIDA. That year, he was nominated for the APDG Emerging Designer Award for his work on Perfect Stranger (2021). He was also selected for the APDG Mentors Program, where he began his mentorship under production designer Fiona Crombie.
After graduating, Hayden has primarily worked in film, TV, and commercials, occupying various roles within the art department. With a background in fine arts and fashion, he excels in art finishing, scenic work, and on-set dressing. In 2023, he worked as a design assistant to Alice Babidge on the limited series Narrow Road to the Deep North, directed by Justin Kurzel. That same year, he designed the set for the theatre show Collapsible, directed by Zoe Hollyoak and staged at the Old Fitz Theatre. The set received critical acclaim, with the Sydney Morning Herald praising his "truly brilliant set" and Stage Noise highlighting his "astonishingly creative use of the Old Fitz stage."
In 2024, Hayden expanded his portfolio further by working as the Production and Costume Designer for the short film Rash, produced by FERVOUR Productions and directed by Claudia Osborne. This project allowed him to showcase his versatility and expertise in both production and costume design, solidifying his reputation as a talented and innovative designer in the industry. Hayden continues to push the boundaries of his craft, creating immersive and impactful visual experiences across various mediums.
